BIOGRAPHY

Photos: Ric Ide

At the Art Institute of Boston, I was a Graphic Design major with a secondary concentration in Painting. After graduation, I made my living as a graphic artist. Although I’ve always painted, I was not totally focused on my work. In the old, pre-computer days, a graphic designer had to use their drawing skills. As the computer took over, I realized how much I missed actually using my hands to create. During the 90s, I began taking workshops in Boston and during my summer vacations at the Cape Cod School of Art. After one workshop with Lois Griffel, I was hooked. Workshops with Rob Longley and a few weekends with Hilda Neily followed. In 1995, I made the move to the outermost part of Cape Cod to concentrate on my painting. Being surrounded by the unlimited beauty of the Outer Cape, the subject matter is endless.

I have always been drawn to the hidden paths and ponds covered with waterlillies of the Beech Forest in Provincetown. This year’s new work is focused on the beauty of nature in some of my favorite places in town.

With each painting I learn something new as I strive to find my true voice. Although I’m exploring a different direction than the traditional Cape School style, I still use the valuable foundation that I learned in those first workshops as a base for my work. For me painting is a continuous learning process. I feel that each artist must be his own toughest critic, always striving to create something better.
